Hello all!
Well, I have a very great story to tell about yesterday being that it was the first day of April, which I am sure that many of you were more than ready for but quite prepared for. Well, being that I am no longer in High School or in a place where April Fool's jokes would be in full swing, I was not really thinking about that lovely holiday as I strolled into Middle School yesterday with a wonderful lesson planned about the Bill of Rights. Well, I was more of thinking in the back of my mind about how great April is because that means that we will get warmer weather and the snow will begin to melt. Now that I have given some background let me tell you about my April Fool's Day experience in Middle School.
As I was walking into the school I was seeing some overly excited students and was not quite sure why that was. There were so many students giggling to each other and staring at the teachers. They would think about something as a smile rose on their face and then they would whisper what appeared to be sweet nothings into each others ears. Being that I was oblivious to what day it was and the pranks that the kids could play on the teachers I still thought nothing of it and just assumed that something big must be happening at school and that was what all the excitement was all about. I then was writing something down and glanced out of the corner of my eye a four students clumped around each other with one student in the middle standing on a chair. I could not really see the student on the chair very well and then as I was looking around them I noticed a circle on the wall as if it appeared that something was missing from the wall. It was then on that the pranks continued.
What was missing from the wall was a clock. I quickly and obviously glanced over at the boys and made eye contact with a few of them to show them that they had been caught. One boy finally caught my eye and with his shocked face whispered to all of the other boys and the boy on the chair quickly put down the clock and jumped off the chair. It was then that they begged me not to say anything because it was all in good fun. But then another teacher came around the corner and mentioned that all of the clocks had been changed and that she was about to fix them all. We quickly realized it was meeting time and we fixed the clocks and the students went to class. Then round two happened.
Being that my placement teacher was out for a couple of days I was teaching the social studies class as the student teacher was teaching spelling before my class. As he asked if anyone had done the homework everyone said they had not. He was not pleased with this and of course was about to write out a ton of homework slips (They get for not doing homework, which is a bad note home!) and him and I looked at each other in disbelief. We knew that the students hated their homework but we could not believe that ALL the students did not do it. Then the students burst out laughing and told us how they did do their homework and it was just an April Fool's joke. We both were not pleased of course but at least they were only joking. (Except, seven did not do their homework for real which is still a high number!)
It was then that before my class I had to make an announcement to them. The students were telling me that they planned on going to their math classes but messing everything up. They were going to spread the word to have every student to go to the wrong room to mess with the teachers. So, before I started class I made the comment that they may want to be careful with how many pranks they make. I explained that they may be funny in the beginning but if they over do it, the teachers would actually get upset with them. I wanted them to know they could have fun with it and the teachers would play along, but know your limit! Needless to say, Middle School was a very interesting experience on April Fool's day and maybe once I am a teacher that should always be a personal day I take off!
Teacher's Rule!
