Hello all!
Well, yesterday was the second Accepted Student Academic day here at SMC for all those Accepted High School seniors who are interested in coming to SMC in the fall. This is a day where the students and their parents can come and we have different events for them to do for most of the day. First of all, they get to meet the Vice President of Admissions, they get to have a parent panel and then a student panel, the students get to walk around with a current student, and then they get to hear an amazing speech by Professor John Kenny. Well, all of this may not seem all that appealing and kind of a lot, but let me explain about everything first.
Well, getting to meet Jerry Flanagan, who is the Vice President of Admissions is probably one of the best parts of the day. Although he is such a big deal on campus, he is an Alumni which almost guarantees him to be an amazing person. He is just a laid back and really fun guy. He is always up for a laugh and a great conversation. I always love running into the guy and having a good conversation about almost anything. It is just nice to know that he is such an important person on campus but also a cool guy that you can talk to. So if you get the chance to meet him you should.
The different panels that you can go to is also quite worth it. For one, we separate the parents and the students. This is where both parties get to answer the questions they are dieing to ask without the other party being there. For instance, the parents can ask questions about the dorms, security, and money. The type of things that the parents want to ask and the questions the students do not like to hear nor care. Also, the parents can ask these questions and not feel as if they are embarrassing their children. Then there is the student panel where the prospective students can ask questions to a panel of current students. This is the time where the interested students in SMC can ask anything they want. They get to ask absolutely anything about the school! They can ask about the good stuff and the bad stuff and the students will answer truthfully. This is really a time where a lot of the time, students chose to come here because of the panels, they are great!
Then the students get to go to lunch with a current student. This is also a wonderful time because again they get to get a current students perspective on the school but with their parents. They also get to eat at Alliot, which is our main dining hall, and they will get to taste the food! This may not seem like a big deal to everyone, but there are some people that would choose to come here or not because of the food, so that is a good opportunity to do so. This is also one of the favorites for me because I loved doing this the last two years and walking interested students around, so it is just a great experience for both the current students and the prospective students and their parents.
Then lastly, the talk from Dr. John Kenny is quite amazing as well. Now, he may not seem like the most interesting guys because he used to be the Academic Dean and is a Saint Augustine scholar. But let me tell you, he is quite an interesting guy! He is just so charismatic and is pretty funny guy. I have had two classes with him and I thoroughly enjoyed his classes because of his positive and bubbly personality and his love for his subject. I felt that when I left his class each day I could not leave without a smile on my face and wanted to learn more because of his excitement with his subject. That is why he speaks with the students so they can see how great our professors are. Then the students can also get a tour of our campus so they can get a feel of what our school looks like and hear a lot about it.
So, why is it so important for students to come to this Academic Day? Well, this is the chance to get to know everything about this school from current students, from faculty, from the Vice President of Admissions, from a current Professor, and then a tour. Honestly, students you need to come because you are getting to see every aspect of our school. I know that it is such a tough decision on what school to chose for the next four years of your life so you need to know all about it to make a good well thought out decision! I know that when students come here for one of these days they will leave thinking that this is the school for them. I loved the conversation I overheard yesterday about a student saying that they mind as well leave, because this is the place she wanted to go! I was so glad to hear that and it made me feel as if I had done my job well.
So for the rest of you accepted students who have not gone to one yet, the last Academic Day is March 10th, another Monday! You can sign up by calling the Admissions Office at 1-800- SMC- 8000!
Good Luck to you all!
