(quote from Annie)
Last weekend I went to NYC with my mom and my sister. We bought tickets for Mary Poppins (on broadway) in July so I have been looking forward to this for quite awhile!
We went to Clifton Park, NY and stayed the night because we took a AAA bus to NYC from their Saturday morning. It was SO CUTE. The AAA bus was mainly for an "American Girl" trip so it was all these mothers and their little 8 year old daughters. ADORABLE! But obviously we weren't there for the dollies so people looked at us a bit funny... as my other sister that went is 15. One woman even asked if we were going to American Girl... "nope, seeing a show!"
We get to NYC around 11am and get dropped off at Bryant Park. As we start walking around Broadway we notice all these picketers outside EVERY single theatre. Wondering what was going on we went up to one of the guys and got his flier. This is what we saw:
We are sorry to inform you, but all Broadway shows have been cancelled this weekend.
WHAT????!!!!!???!!!
So if you watch the news you might have known that was coming. Apparently all the stagehands this past weekend decided that they were going to strike because of wages. I'm not fully educated on their pay and there is a lot of controversy over whether they should have done a strike or not... so that is not going to be something I comment on here.
Well I walk right up to another picketer and say "are ALL the shows REALLY cancelled?" He replies, "All but a few. Mary Poppins and Young Frankenstein are still showing because their stagehands are under a different union.
HALLELUIA!!!!
So long story short... we got to see the show! It was AMAAAAAAAZING. Remember feeling (as a kid) that Mary Poppins was so magical? Well they were able to really capture that on stage. Just simply amazing. If you are into theatre, I definately recommend it. I see many TONY's coming in this show's near future. I won't give away the surprises of the show, but take my word for it you will be BLOWN away!!!
